ANXIETY : HOW AM I COPING?

After struggling with anxiety quite severely for the past 3 years, I’ve never really been able to cope with it and I always found ways to give me a temporary distraction or I’d run away from the situations that made me anxious. If I’m writing this then obviously that stuff DOES NOT work, I’ve learnt that the more that you avoid anxious situations the more likely you are to never face them or when you do face them your anxiety will never improve.

Enough was enough for me, I decided I had let anxiety ruin my life for way too long and it was destroying not only my day to day life but my relationships with people around me. I was not only anxious but because I had isolated myself so much and continuously ran away from situations which may make me overwhelmed with that ghastly feeling, I also started having negative thoughts about myself which was really detrimental to not only my wellbeing but my relationship with my partner and family.

I’m currently going through counselling within the NHS, they’ve been so supportive and opened to my eyes to all of the negative things I was doing that was definitely not improving my mental state. Counselling won’t cure me, but my supporter gives me ways to allow myself to come to terms with my anxiety so that I stop running away from it.

I’m going to write a list of what I’ve started doing, everyone’s different but if one person reads this and it helps them in some type of way then I’m happy:

  1. I’ve started to wake up at 7am every morning, this has made me so much more motivated for the day and I feel better knowing I’m being productive earlier.
  2. Going to the gym has been a life saviour for me, it has made my mental stability so much better and it’s also made me feel so much better about myself. Looking after yourself is so important, physically and mentally.
  3. Cutting down my intake of caffeine, although in the past day of two I’ve admittedly drunk way more caffeine than I should’ve but it really does make a difference.
  4. Facing my anxious situations without running away, I guess this has been the one that was the hardest to do. I keep facing my fears and instead of running away when it gets tough, I stay and I tell myself over and over that I’m going to be fine. The more you go to a place that makes you anxious, the more the level of anxiety decreases. I know it’s hard, it is probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to do but you have to make that step for yourself if you want to get better.
  5. I’ve recently started reading again, I used to be a huge book reader when I was younger and I regret stopping because it’s so good to not be on social media constantly. It’s also a good way to expand your vocabulary and it’s a relaxing activity.
  6. Eating clean, I don’t snack through the day and if I do it’s either fruit or a healthy snack. Being healthier and getting the correct nutrients makes you so much more happier and gives you so much more energy for the day. It’s definitely worth a try.

They are pretty standard things, but they make a huge difference to me and ever since doing them they’ve made me a happier person internally and they’ve allowed me to strengthen relationships with the people I care most about. At the end of the day if you have people in your life that drag you down and make you feel worthless or that you’re to blame for things that go on, cut them loose. You don’t need anyone in your life that stops you from trying to become the best person of yourself. I hope this helps anyone who may be struggling or know someone else who is struggling.

lots of love, L x
